An Animosa man was killed as a result of a crash with a Region 2 Transit bus last Thursday on the Avenue of the Saints.

Eugene Schipper, 76, of Anamosa, died as a result of injuries received in the collision, according to an updated report by the Iowa State Patrol released Monday.

The accident was reported at 1:48 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30., at the intersection of Highway 18 and Glass Avenue (county road T-26).

According to the patrol report, a 2007 Eldorado transit bus driven by Mark Helmers, 47, of Charles City, was crossing the Avenue of the Saints and failed to yield the right of way to a 2015 Jeep Compass (a compact SUV) that was traveling west on the avenue and was driven by Schipper.

After the vehicles collided the Jeep went into the ditch and the van stopped on the highway.

One person on the bus, Shannon Nissen, 56, no address given, was injured and transported to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City by Nora Springs Ambulance.

The accident is under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.

The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office put out a statement on its Facebook page Monday, calling the last several days “rough” because of several accidents and the discovery Friday of the body of a missing Grundy Center man in Floyd County.

“Please, … obey the speed limits, put the phones away, obey stop and yield signs, get plenty of rest and look twice and even three times before crossing intersections,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “With more holidays and traffic approaching, let’s be safe. It’s doesn’t matter when we get to our destination, what matters is that we get there.”
