A weather advisory is in effect for the Floyd County area from Thursday afternoon to Friday morning, including the possibility of several inches of snow.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory for Floyd, Chickasaw, Mitchell, Howard, Winneshiek, Fayette and Clayton counties in northeast Iowa from 3 p.m. Thursday to 9 a.m. Friday morning.

“Snow is going to develop across north-central Iowa Thursday afternoon, then quickly spread across northeast Iowa into southwest Wisconsin late Thursday afternoon into early Thursday evening,” the weather service said.

“The snow will continue and be heavy at times Thursday night, then taper off from west to east Friday morning,” the advisory said.

“The Thursday evening commute may be impacted for some in parts of northeast Iowa, while the Friday morning commute looks to be impacted for all areas,” it said. “Plan on slippery road conditions.”

The heaviest snow is expected Thursday night. A total of 3 to 6 inches is expected, with the highest amounts falling between Oelwein and Dubuque.

A winter weather advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties, the weather service said.

“Be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibilities, and use caution while driving,” it said.

The latest road conditions for Iowa can be obtained by calling 5-1-1.
