Reading is cool, and Charles City students know it.
The Read Across America event in Charles City welcomed scores of children to Lincoln Elementary School Wednesday afternoon to meet the Cat in the Hat and get a free book.
The event entertained the children with a magic table, a coloring table and a Cat in the Hat photo booth.
“There’s a bunch of people sponsoring this Dr. Seuss Read Across America event,” said Angie Holzer, a teacher and president of the local education association. “It was supposed to be Monday, but it got moved to tonight because of the snow.”
The big thing is to get kids reading and let them pick out a free book on behalf of Iowa State Education Association, or ISEA, and the Local Charles City Community Education Association, Holzer said.
“It does require a lot of help,” she said. “We do it every other year.”
The kids received a ticket when they came in that let them know what was going on, such as getting a photo with the Cat in the Hat.
Jason Enke, ISEA union director, put on a magic show for the kids using coins and slight-of-hand tricks.
Charles City High School students helped put on the event and volunteered at some of the tables.
The event is usually held near the birthday of Dr. Seuss, which is March 2.
It was sponsored this year by Fareway, Valero, Hy-Vee, McDonald’s, the Charles City Education Association, ISEA, the Lincoln and Washington Elementary PTOs and the Charles City School District.
