Progress continues on Riverside Cemetery chapel

Progress continues on the historic chapel in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.
The exterior has been painted to match the original green trim and a gravel path to a basement door has been replaced with paver stones and a drain cleaned out, said Jeff Sisson, a member of the St. Charles Cemetery Association.
The roof had been replaced earlier with a material similar to the original clay tile, in time to be announced at a trivia night fundraiser held in March.
Downspouts and gutters have also now been replaced.
“Next is masonry work and stained glass, which we hope to do this summer,” Sisson said.
The stonework needs some tuckpointing, and the stained-glass windows “need some serious work,” he said. Some windows need repairs and some will need to be replaced.
“The preservation architect said it’s a project you work on from the top down,” Sisson said.
“A bit of landscaping will be done this summer, too,” he added.
The big project for next year will be interior painting.
Sisson said work is being done with funds from the cemetery and 8th grade class fundraisers, and the St. Charles Cemetery Association.
Last school year, Charles City eighth-graders adopted renewing the historic Riverside Cemetery as a project and came up with various goals including renovating the chapel. Those students, now freshmen, are mentoring the current eighth-grade class in continuing that focus, including organizing the second trivia night fundraiser that was held in March.
