Lessons are taught on a daily basis at Immaculate Conception elementary school in Charles City.

On Wednesday, it was the students — not the teachers — who were able to give some instruction on how do things.

For moments throughout the day, each member of Cari Barry’s fifth-grade class at IC stood in front of classmates and explained his or her desired lesson for the day.

“They could do a lesson on whatever they wanted as long as it was approved by their parents and I,” said Barry, who teaches fifth and sixth grade.

Some took their dog to school and demonstrated how it does tricks. One student brought a parakeet to class. Others taught everyone how to make food or crafts — or how to play a game.

The fun really started when cows and horses started to show up.

One student brought their cow to IC. They demonstrated the proper steps and techniques in showmanship of the animal. Lilly Stough brought her horse to school. She put a saddle on the horse and explained everything that you need to know about her horse. She also let her fellow classmates pet the horse as well.
