After three rainouts, students organizing a drive-in movie theater on Friday night in Charles City were happy to get a flick in.

Iowa BIG North screened the movie “Wonder” on Friday night at the Charles City Middle School. Several Charles City High School students, including Charles City High 2018 grad Lee Hoeft, helped organize the invent and inflate the big movie screen.

The movie played on a gigantic inflatable screen under the middle school balcony. The screen is 30 feet wide and 17 feet tall. Charles City Iowa BIG North shares the screen every other weekend with New Hampton.

Movie patrons could pull up a lawn chair or sit on a blanket to watch the show. Food and refreshments from the concession stand could also be purchased during the showing, which is a freewill donation.

The effort by the students is a result of a group called Small Town Struggles — a student–based leadership program that helps find things for young adults to do on the weekend.

Iowa BIG North is a partnership of Charles City, New Hampton, Osage and Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock school districts. The goal is to engage students in initiative–based learning.
