Thanks to Steve Robel and Quality Auto Service in Charles City, Jordy is $500 closer to joining the Charles City Police Department.

Robel is challenging other Charles City businesses and organizations to match that.

“This is something that will help keep the community safe, and it helps improve interaction between the community and the Police Department,” Robel said.

Robel hopes his donation will encourage others to donate and help “get Jordy trained and get him up here.”

Jordy is a Dutch shepherd. The dog and his partner, K9 officer Dario Gamino, will be working to help stop the proliferation of narcotics in the area. Jordy is trained to execute search warrants and has a nose for sniffing out drugs. Gamino and Jordy will soon become inseparable, as Gamino will work closely with the dog after he leaves his current residence, Midwest K-9 in Des Moines. Gamino was hired as an officer in May 2017.

Jordy will replace Midnight, who retired last year because of medical issues. Midnight, a black Lab mix, had joined the force in 2009.

The Police Department has put a down payment on Jordy so Midwest K-9 can hold the animal until enough funds are raised to be able to bring him back home to Charles City.

The total cost associated with the purchase of Jordy is $12,000, which includes outfitting a police vehicle to keep him safe. The CCPD received a grant for $3,000 and will take donations and hold fundraisers to cover the cost of the K-9 unit.

T-shirts are available for sale to raise funds to help pay for Jordy. People can also send donations to the Charles City Police Department or make checks payable to the Charles City Police Department – K-9.
