A recreational fire started in a backyard on 16th Avenue in Charles City around 9 p.m. Monday could have been a lot worse, according to Assistant Fire Chief Marty Parcher.

The Charles City Fire Department responded to the address and quickly contained the fire.

“They were trying to start a recreational fire using some flammable liquid and it obviously got away from them,” said Parcher. “It could have been way, way worse.”

One person received medical attention at the scene.

“It’s just very minor — superficial. Maybe a burn. It’s just starting to turn red,” said Dawn Staudt, station manager for AMR Ambulance.

Parcher said a quick response by the Charles City Fire Department, volunteers and police officers mitigated a situation that could have turned into something far worse.

“It sounds like they tried to use gas to start this and possibly the gas can caught fire as she tried to carry it around the house and move around to put it out as it was burning. It got next to the garbage cans. She had to set it down cause it was on fire and it set them on fire,” said Parcher.
