Charles City Homecoming Week packed with activities

The theme this year is “Burning Up the Competition” as the Charles City School District celebrates homecoming with a week packed full of activities, starting on Monday.

Special dress-up days for the week will start with “Meme Monday” at the high school, while the elementary schools will have “Mismatch Monday.”

The rest of the week’s dress up days will include Tropical Tuesday, Winter Wonderland Wednesday, Character/Dynamic Duo Day on Thursday and Orange and Black Blowout on Friday for all schools.

As always, Friday will be the busiest day, with mobile pep rallies at the elementary schools at 8:30 a.m., the high school tailgate at 11:15 a.m., the pep rally at 2 p.m. followed by the homecoming court coronation at Comet Gym.

The parade will start on Main Street at 4:15 p.m., with the Comet Pride Community Tailgate, sponsored by Charles City Community Excellence in Education Foundation, in the Charles City High School parking lot at 4:30 p.m.

The tailgate party will include games, face painting and grilled hot dogs and hamburgers for sale. There will be a Comet Hall of Fame recognition at the tailgate at 6 p.m.

The freshman football game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., with homecoming court recognition scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

The Comet Marching Band will perform “The Music of Billy Joel” at halftime of the varsity football game, which is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m.

After the game, the homecoming dance will be at the high school while the post-game homecoming party will be at the Elks Lodge. The party is sponsored by Charles City Community Excellence in Education Foundation and will include a game replay with coaches, snacks and drinks.

On Saturday morning, the Comet Hall of Fame Brunch will include the Hall of Fame Induction, the Master of Sports Recognition and the Master of Performing Arts Recognition.

2018 Comet Hall of Fame Inductees are Tye Darland, Cathy Darland, Nathan Dishman, Al Hastings, Marilee Monroe and Jerry Newton. Those interested in attending should purchase tickets at local banks, the Charles City High School and Charles City Community School District Central Office.

There will also be a varsity volleyball tournament at Comet Gym starting Saturday morning.

The week will kick off Monday with a TRACES Center for History and Culture Presentation at Charles City High School, as Iowa historian and author Michael Luick-Thrams will discuss “Hidden Histories, Taboo Topics” to Charles City High School sophomores. The program includes two presentations at the Charles City High School, “Kickin’ the Kaiser” and “The Klan: The White Cancer,” starting at 9:30 a.m.

Tuesday will include Charles City High School Spirit Day activities throughout the community. Wednesday is fourth-grade farm safety day at the fairgrounds and Thursday is eighth-grade community service day.
