They weren’t extinguishing any blazing fires Sunday morning, but they were working over a sizzling griddle and pouring hot cups of coffee.

Charles City firefighter Jason Webster flipped the pancakes while his comrades Russ Bornstein and Cole Schmidt served up ham and poured juice and milk as the Charles City Fire Department hosted a pancake breakfast fundraiser Sunday morning.

A steady stream of people offered up a freewill donation to the volunteer part of the Fire Department in exchange for a hot meal and some good Sunday morning conversation at the firehouse.

The event comes at the conclusion of Fire Prevention Week and is the only fundraiser for the volunteer fire department in Charles City. Fire Chief Eric Whipple said the department has been putting on the breakfast for as long as he can remember.

“We’ve been doing it since I was in the fire department, so that’s at least 16 years,” said Whipple, who added that there is usually a good turnout and Sunday was no exception.

“We usually have at least 300-350 people come through,” he said. “We’ve got about about 450-500 plates ready today.”

The volunteer department spends the proceeds on equipment.

“Specifically this year, we’re doing some fundraising for boat and water rescue equipment,” Whipple said.
