A few members of the Charles City Community School District Board of Education and Superintendent Mike Fisher braced against a chilling wind for a little over an hour on Saturday morning on Main Street as they met with a handful of passers-by for a listening post.

“We just hope to hear from the community, from the public,” said board member Missy Freund. ‘We’re out here available to listen to whatever concerns or positive things that the public would like to share with us.”

The members huddled outside of the Edward D. Jones building at 218 N. Main St., although a few occasionally escaped into Aromas for a quick, hot beverage.

One woman proudly took the opportunity to stand in the bitter wind and address the board members with a list of concerns.

“I represent a lot of people who feel the same way I do,” she said. “I asked them all to come down here with me but they were busy or scared to, but I’m not.”

The woman said she was a grandmother who, among other things, has had problems with parking during drop-off and pick-up times at the middle school. She said there was confusion over where the cars were supposed to wait, and there had been times when she’d needed to get out of her car in bad weather and injured her ankle. She said the problem was compounded because one of her grandchildren was a special needs child.

The board members and Fisher listened to her, answered her questions and offered a few suggestions. She seemed pleased with the results of the conversation and happy to be listened to.

“One person was discussing how they feel that the new bus system was working well,” Freund said. “We want to be out here to listen and hear what they have to say.”

There was no word as to when and where the next listening post will be held, although it won’t be a surprise if it’s at a time and place a little less cold and windy.
