To the Press

The first leaf pickup in Charles City will be next Monday, Oct. 29. Residents are asked to rake leaves into the street 18-24 inches away from the curb so leaves can be picked up more easily and rain water can flow to the storm sewers.

Street department workers will start on the west side of town and work north to the avenues, then back to the south to Clark Street and on to the south side of the river. More collection dates will follow.

The last brush pickup of the year is today (Monday.) Residents are requested to arrange brush in an orderly manner to help pickup by Street Department workers.

Due to construction activities on the Clark Street Recreation Trail Extension Project, Clark Street between Terrace Road and Lakeshore Drive will be restricted to one lane of traffic on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Flaggers will be present to stop vehicles and alternate traffic using the eastbound lane.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid this area if possible.

Projects planned to be completed this fall include:

• Hildreth Street paving — Fall 2018 construction to 6th Street. Southbound lane is completed and the northbound lane is expected to be paved on Monday. Work from 6th Street to 9th Street will be completed 2019.

• Hot mixed asphalt paving project — planned to be placed next week.

• Clark Street Trail extension project — Trail paving will be placed next Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 23-24.

• Hulin Street storm sewer construction — Will be completed yet this month

• Main Street sidewalk replacement project — Street light bases and electric conduit have been placed; the construction of the concrete sidewalk will begin next week.

Rain or early snow could affect any of these plans. Questions can be directed to the Charles City Engineering Department at 641-257-6300.
