Lee Kennedy of Lewiston Monument Co. added some names to the Floyd County Veterans Memorial in Charles City on Friday.

A total of 27 new names were carved into two of the memorial’s 14 granite pillars Friday, adding to the more than 2000 names already engraved on the memorial, located on the county courthouse lawn. The names to be engraved are cut into thick rubber stencils at the monument company, then adhered to the smooth marble to provide a template for Kennedy to sandblast the letters. After the names are cut, whitener is applied to make the letters stand out.

The memorial, established in 2008, is dedicated to all Floyd County area veterans who have honorably served, are currently serving or will serve in the uniformed services of the United States during peacetime, conflict or war. The five uniformed services are the Marines, Coast Guard, Army, Navy and Air Force.

There is a master list on site that helps direct people trying as they try to locate the names carved into the stones.

Any veteran born, resided or who otherwise has ties to Floyd County is eligible to have his or her name placed on the memorial. More information and application forms are available at floydcoia.org.
