Anyone who wanted seconds on pie and ice cream at the Charles City Senior Center on Sunday could help themselves at no extra cost.

“We have wonderful pie makers here,” said Judy Hauser, senior center volunteer. “We’ve got plenty of pie.”

Many of those in attendance put that to the test at the Charles City Senior Center Fall Festival. Along with the many varieties of pie, Hauser said that 50 pounds of maidrites and 18 pounds of cheesy potatoes were served up, along with baked beans and potato chips.

Volunteers served up the food and provided table service at the annual event, which has been going on for many years and is open to the public. Hauser said that she usually expects to see about 120 people.

In recent years the group has added a silent auction to the festival, which included a wide variety of items such as jewelry, plants, puzzles, holiday decor and much more.

“Last year we made $600 on the silent auction alone, and that took care of one month’s heat and light here, so we were pleased,” Hauser said.  “The only way that the senior center can exist is through this kind of thing, bingo and donations.”

Hauser said it costs just $10 to join the Charles City Senior Center, and some of the benefits include meals, available Monday through Friday, along with different programs available throughout the week.

Members can also come and play pool anytime, participate in Tuesday night bingo, attend the annual Christmas party, and play card games such as 500 and Bridge. Members can also rent the center at a discounted rate.

“Everyone is welcome to join,” Hauser said.
