A wintry mix of precipitation is expected to spread northeast across the area Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The precipitation is expected to transition to rain or snow, depending on how warm the surface temperatures are.

Where temperatures will be closer to the freezing mark, several inches of snow are possible, mainly from later Saturday morning through Sunday morning. It is possible that significant snow accumulation could occur in the watch area, the NWS said.

A winter storm watch is in effect from Saturday morning through Sunday morning in Floyd, Chickasaw and other area northern Iowa counties.

Light mixed precipitation and heavy snow is possible, with total snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches in this area and possibly a light glaze of ice through portions of northeast Iowa and southeast Minnesota.

The National Weather Service warns that travel could be very difficult.

A winter storm watch means there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel. NWS advises people continue to monitor the latest forecasts.
