A Nashua native who served as Nashua police chief and with the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office has been confirmed as the U.S. marshal for the Northern District of Iowa.

The U.S. Senate confirmed Douglas J. Strike to the position on a voice vote last week. He had been nominated by President Trump in October following a joint recommendation by Iowa Sens. Charles Grassley and Joni Ernst, according to information from the senators’ offices.

Strike served as chief of police for the Nashua Police Department from 1974 to 1977. He then joined the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office, where he served from 1977 to 2001, the last 20 years as chief deputy. He was chief of police for the Iowa Falls Police Department from 2001 to 2006.

Strike is also a past president of the Iowa Sheriffs and Deputies Association, as well as a former board member of the Iowa Chiefs of Police and Peace Officers Association.

He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and holds an associate’s degree in Police Science from Hawkeye Institute of Technology.

Grassley said after the confirmation last week, “Mr. Strike served as a law enforcement officer in Iowa for over 30 years, equipping him with the knowledge and skills required to successfully carry out this position. He will continue to serve the people of Iowa with distinction in this new role.”

Ernst said, “Mr. Strike has a long history of accomplished service, serving and protecting Iowans for three decades. I want to thank my colleagues for confirming him as the United States marshal for the Northern District of Iowa and offer congratulations to Mr. Strike.”

U.S. marshals serve for four-year terms. Strike will replace Kenneth Runde, a former Dubuque County sheriff who served two terms after first being appointed by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate in 2010.

There are 94 federal judicial districts, including the Northern District and Southern District in Iowa, each overseen by a marshall. The Northern District in Iowa includes 52 counties and has its primary office in Cedar Rapids with a branch office in Sioux City.

According to its website, usmarshals.gov, the U.S. Marshals Service was the first federal law enforcement agency, starting in 1789. It is the primary law enforcement arm of the federal courts, and includes more than 3,500 deputy marshals serving in more than 350 locations in the United States and U.S. territories.

The service safeguards federal witnesses and operates the federal witness protection program, transports federal prisoners, apprehends and arrests federal fugitives, protects federal judges and oversees seized assets, and assists other law enforcement agencies.
