The Lion’s Club eyeglass and hearing aid drop box, located on Main Street in Charles City, across the street from The Charles Theatre, recently collected its 5,000th pair of glasses.

Lions Club members remove the glasses periodically and send them to Lions Club International, where they are inspected, cleaned and sorted.

The prescriptions are read and catalogued and the glasses are then taken by volunteer eye doctors to Central America, and fitted for local residents free of charge. Lions Clubs in Iowa  recycle more than 100,000 pairs of glasses each year.

The dropbox, which has been at that location since January 2013, was originally donated to the Lions by the Charles City Police Department, who had received it from Mr. Movies.

The Charles City Lions said they thank the citizens of Floyd County and the surrounding areas for the overwhelming support of this project.
