The questions are going to be tough.

That’s according to Charles City eighth-grader Maya Bruening.

“I’ve seen the questions from last year, so I know they’re going to be really difficult,” she said. “But it’ll be a lot of fun.”

Bruening and classmate Anna Herbrechtsmeyer are among a group of about 20 eighth-grade students who are organizing the third annual trivia night, which will be Saturday, March 2, at Charles City High School Competition Gym #1. The doors will open at 6:15 p.m. and the games begin at 7 p.m.

Snacks and drinks will be served to each table throughout the night, Erik Hoefer will once again be master of ceremonies, and there will also be a silent auction.

The students have been busy making phone calls and sending out emails. On Friday, the group was going around to local businesses to pick up silent auction donations.

“We have been reaching out to businesses to see if they would like to participate in the event,” said Herbrechtsmeyer, who added that the theme for the event this year will be “camping.” The gym will be decorated like a big campsite.

“We’ve been brainstorming ideas,” she said. “We’re thinking about having tents as centerpieces to the tables, and things like that.”

Teams of six people will compete against each other to answer the most trivia questions correctly, in categories including sports, literature, movies, geography and music. For more information on sponsoring tables call 641-425-5132, or email the 8th Grade Riverside Chapel Committee at ccriversidetrivia@gmail.com.

Individuals looking to play but who don’t have a team can call and see if there are any spots available. Bruening and Herbrechtsmeyer said that sometimes they are able to match up people with an open spot and sometimes they aren’t.

“Proceeds will go to the Riverside Chapel to help repair the stained-glass windows,” Bruening said.

Amanda Rahmiller, Charles City Middle School teacher and trivia night organizer, said that last year, 39 tables of six were sold for the trivia event, filling the Charles City Middle School gymnasium with more than 200 people.

Nearly $10,000 was raised from the trivia night event the first year, in 2017, and last year’s event raised $12,844.13. The kids were able to secure a $15,000 grant as well, and the roof was replaced on the chapel in the cemetery prior to the event in 2018.

The team “Players To Be Named Later” won the night with 79 points last year. The team, made up of Michelle Grob, James Grob, Derek Sturtevant, Bob Fenske, David Voves and Rene Voves, is returning this year to defend its title.
