Three-time state qualifier Dylan Koresh still alive in consolations

DES MOINES — Though a persistent problem for aging adults, gaining weight is a natural progression for healthy and active teenagers.

Perhaps the best evidence of this is in the program for the Iowa State Wrestling Championships.

When you look at the history of the multiple state qualifiers, you’ll often see that these wrestlers move up through the weight classes from year to year.

There are some exceptions.

From last year’s 152-pound weight class, Kyler Rieck of Spirit Lake Park and Dylan Koresh of Charles City respectively stood on the second- and seventh-place podium steps at the end of the meet.

Koresh, a third-year qualifier, moved up two classes to qualify as a 170-pounder. Rieck, on the other hand, stayed put while qualifying again at 152.

Rieck was Charles City junior Carter Proffitt’s first-round opponent Thursday.

Proffitt’s path to state included several come-from-behind championship bout victories in the postseason. Against top-seed Rieck, Proffitt kept things close deep into the match before Rieck finally put him away with a fall victory at the 3:35 mark.

Later, Proffitt had his first state tournament ended when he lost a 7-3 decision to Coy Ruess of West Liberty in the subsequent consolation. Proffitt finished the season with a 30-12 record.

Koresh also was sent to the consolation round after his first-round loss to West Delaware freshman Wyatt Voelker. Koresh took a 2-0 first-period lead with a takedown before Voelker eventually went up 4-3 late in the third period. Needing a takedown to win with the bout now in the standup position, Voelker was able to hold Koresh off as time expired.

Koresh is not done, yet. With a subsequent 10-3 decision over Oelwein senior Bryan Graves in the consolation first-round, Koresh (33-10) is still active in the tournament for a possible second-straight podium-place finish.

Like Proffitt, Charles City 126-pound Alec Staudt was also making his state meet debut. Against Carter Logue of Carlisle, Staudt was pinned at the 3:18 mark of their first-round match.

Staudt then had his season ended with a 7-6 decision loss to Lake Labahn of Union. Staudt finished with a 22-18 record.
