Council planning session covers items

The Charles City Council will hold a voting session tonight at city hall.

Most of the items discussed at the council planning session’s April 11 meeting will be covered at the April 16 voting session.

During the planning session, the council discussed forgiving the balance on a rehabilitation loan from the Charles City Housing Department.

The request comes from Kathy Boge. The property was rehabilitated in 2015.

The city holds a forgivable mortgage on the property. After five years the city would forgive it if all of the terms have been met, but Boge has only been in the property for two years.

“The sale of the home is necessary because she will be required to apply for Medicaid to cover the costs of the assisted living facility,” according to council documents. “She will be required to spend down any proceeds from the cost of her home to under $2,000.”

Charles City Housing Director Heidi Nielsen advised the council not to forgive the loan, because the sale of the house will recoup the cost.

Boge has is currently in the third year and the amount of the mortgage is now 40 percent less than the original amount of $24,999.

New Squad Car

The Charles City Police Department requested $29,737 for a new squad car. Charles City Police Chief High Anderson requested the funds to order the car during the current fiscal year.

The council will also vote on approval of a structural inspection of 201 and 203 N. Main St and a consider motion to approve a site plan without the added parking spaces for Central Park Dentistry expansion project.

The upcoming session is scheduled for 6 p.m. today at the Charles City Council Chambers.
