Letter carriers to pick up food donations May 14

Non-perishables can be left in mailboxes

Staff Report

Annually for 24 years, Charles City letter carriers have gathered food donations to help people in need of a hand.

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will take place Saturday, May 14, in Charles City and across the nation. It’s the largest one-day food drive in the nation.

Carriers will collect non-perishable food donations left by mailboxes and in post offices and deliver them to Charles City’s food pantry on Main Street.

To donate, just place a box or can of non-perishable food next to your mailbox before your letter carrier delivers mail on the May 14. The carrier will do the rest. The food is sorted, and delivered to an area food bank or pantry, where it is available for needy families.

The carriers ask that you check the expiration date on donations because the pantry is not allowed to accept donations past expiration dates.

Volunteers will help the local carriers with the food drive.

With 49 million people facing hunger every day in America, including nearly 16 million children, this drive is one way you can help those in our community.
