To the Press

The National Nineteenth Amendment Society will recognize Rhoda McCartney with the first Floyd County Woman of Influence award on May 1 with a champagne brunch, program, and celebration at the Charles City Elks Lodge.

The year 2020 will be the 100th anniversary for passage of the 19th Amendment which guaranteed voting rights for women. To coincide with the 100th anniversary in 2020, the Society has developed a five-year plan of activities and events to celebrate this milestone which includes designation of a Woman of Influence.

In honor of Carrie (Lane) Chapman-Catt’s leadership role in this effort, a Woman of Influence award will be given to women who have a connection to Charles City or Floyd County, have made an enduring, monumental impact on their community, and the impact has remained viable throughout the years.

“Rhoda’s leadership and vision have resulted in a dynamic, interactive facility that features the contributions Carrie Lane Chapman Catt brought to the fight for the right of women to vote and giving women the power of the ballot box,” said Phyllis Meyer, Society board member and Woman of Influence Chair.

The public is invited to join the celebration on May 1 at the Elks Lodge, 2111 Clark Street, Charles City. A champagne brunch at 12:30 will be followed by a presentation by Jane Cox about the life of Carrie Lane Chapman Catt. Tickets may be ordered by calling Rosie Pieper , 1st Vice President, National 19th  Amendment Society at 641-228-4415 or by e-mail at grpiep@gmail.com.

The Society is a local, non-profit group that is dedicated to telling the story of Carrie Lane Chapman Catt, an internationally known woman who grew up just outside of Charles City. Carrie’s girlhood home located at 2379 Timber Avenue was purchased, restored, and opened for public tours in 2005 followed by a newly constructed Interpretive Center in 2011 on the same site. Both facilities are dedicated to telling the story of Carrie and her leadership that resulted in passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920.
