While students are counting down the days until classes are over, Estes Construction workers are looking toward the beginning of the 2016-17 school year.

“I feel confident that we’ll meet our finish date,” Estes Construction Project Superintendent Kirk Lundberg, said. “Until that happens I lose sleep.”

“Stress levels go up as the project gets near the end,” Estes Construction Project Engineer Mike Tharp said.

Space and timing are the culprits causing the extra stress.

“(The stress is) partly because a lot more trades are in a lot less space — people working on top of each other,” Lundberg said.

Not only are more people working in close quarters, they have the added challenge of working around materials. Before focus was placed on the gymnasium, it could be used a construction site warehouse for materials, Lundberg said. Now that work crews are in the gym painting, hanging speakers and preparing to lay the initial layers of the floor it can no longer be used for storage.

“It makes getting deliveries that have to be stored inside (more difficult),” Lundberg said.

“A bunch of casework was delivered today — cabinets, benches, shelves,” Tharp said.

These items can be seen resting in various places around the developing building, patiently waiting to be installed.

“(Workers have) to take the time to slow down,” Tharp said. Work crews need to be conscious of their surroundings to keep finished areas from being dinged, scuffed or otherwise damaged.
