Timothy Speas will join the Floyd County Veterans Affairs Commission when current Commissioner Dennis Sanvig’s term expires June 30.

Sanvig did not wish to extend his position for another three-year term, according to a memo to the County Board by Veterans Affairs Director Maria Deike.

The County Board approved the appointment of Speas at its Tuesday meeting.

Speas, a Charles City resident, retired as the Charles City Fareway store manager in 2013. He had been an employee of the company for 43 years, with 20 years managing the Charles City store.

The commission recommended either Speas or former Veterans Affairs Commissioner Steven R. Merrill be appointed. Merrill, however, was the “first recommendation.”

“This was justified by his previous commissioner position, and overall experience of involvement with veterans organizations,” Deike wrote.

Speas “would also be a proactive individual in the position,” she added.

Both men are veterans.

At the County Board’s Monday workshop meeting, Deike said she could work well with either man.

As of July 1, the commission’s member will be Speas, Connie Glandon, Maureen Ruane, Robert Mondt and William Vetter.

Vetter’s term also expires on June 30, but he has accepted the commission’s request to accept another three-year term.

The commission meets at 4 p.m. on the third Monday of each month in the Veterans Affairs office on the first floor of the Floyd County Courthouse.
