Dog park support leaps forward, schedules public hearing

To the Press

A committee has been formed to begin the process of creating a park for dogs in the Charles City area.  Pet ownership has increased in the past decade, and dog parks have become popular as safe areas are sought for exercise and socialization. Many of the larger cities, as well as the surrounding communities of Waverly, Mason City, and Cedar Falls already have dog parks.  This addition will make Charles City competitive as a location that welcomes individuals and families with dogs, said Marcie Andrews in a press release.

At a recent city council meeting, the council showed support to pursue this project at the Waverly Hill park located on South Grand and 6th Street in Charles City. The park would feature separate fenced in areas for both large and small dogs, enabling off leash exercise.  Entry would be gained through two sets of double gates, and water would be readily available. The city has agreed to continue to maintain the area after the dog park is complete.

Donations are needed to make this dog park a reality.  An account has been set up at First Security Bank and Trust in Charles City for this purpose.  Please consider donating to this great cause, which will be an asset to our community.

A public informative meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at 5:15 p.m. at the City Hall Council Chambers.  Anyone with questions on the new dog park or interested in serving on the committee is encouraged to attend.
