By 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office had already counted nine accidents in the weather, the office said on Facebook.

“It’s still winter…Please slow down,” the office posted on it’s Facebook page, above a photo of yet another car stuck in a snow-covered ditch.

The sheriff’s office also posted a photo of a semi truck, which jackknifed on the slick Avenue of the Saints near Rudd. Three more cars and one pickup truck had also slid in the ditch through the county, and two cars collided on a railroad overpass on Gilbert Street, Investigator Patrick Shirley told the Press.

“I did not hear of any injuries. Lucky day today,” Shirley said.

The sheriff’s office always prepares in advance of snow or inclement weather, he added.

“We all plan to be out on the roads, waiting for it to come. It’s inevitable … we have cars that lose control and crash,” Shirley said. “The biggest thing is there’s the failing of preparing to allow more time to get from point A to point B.”

“It’s usually speed that causes accidents,” he said.

Shirley advises drivers who see a vehicle ahead of them struggling to slow down and give the vehicle space, he said.

“Nowadays there’s cell phones … if they ever see a vehicle go in the ditch, dial 911 and get us out there,” Shirley said.

Accumulations of 1 to 3 inches of snow are expected through early Thursday morning, the National Weather Service forecasted on Wednesday. Visibilities as low as 1/4 of a mile were recorded in the Floyd, Chickasaw and Mitchell County regions. Snow was expected to taper off at around noon on Wednesday. Thursday has a 60 percent chance of snow, but no snow was forecasted into Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

By Sunday the high is expected to be 59 degrees and mostly sunny.

“I can’t wait for spring,” Shirley said.
