CHARLES CITY — Sportsmen’s Park is set to receive repairs to one of it’s shelters.

During a planning session the Charles City Council heard from the Parks and Recreation Department concerning the state of a Sportsmen’s Park shelter and repairs needed.

Steve Lindaman, Charles City Parks and Recreation director, updated the council on his department.

There is a budget of $20,000 to remove ash trees in Charles City, and replanting as trees are removed, Lindaman said.

A Sportsmen’s Park shelter repair was discussed by Lindaman with the council.

“We’ll probably get another 20 year out of it with the repairs,” Lindaman said.

The repairs have a budget of $40,000.

There are restrooms in the south end of the park for students to utilize during the repairs, Lindaman said

DeLaine Freeseman, Charles City Council member, asked whether there was anything not being fixed in regards to the shelter.

“There really isn’t anything that isn’t being addressed,” Lindaman said. “It’s pretty much a small project.”

The shelter has an estimated a quote of $16,380 by Watertight Construction out of Charles City.

“There’s no phase two, or phase three, this is it,” said Charles City Mayor James Erb.

City Insurance

During the planning session the City Council also heard from Bob Ingram of Sisson and Associates about renewing the city insurance policy.

“If we were to lose city we’d have $48 million to put it back,” Ingram said.

Ingram went over what insurance coverage the city would be renewing and how much coverage the city had for cars, floods, police patrol cars and firetrucks.

Bridge inspection

Main Street and the Charley Western bridges over the Cedar River were discussed and further evaluations for them were considered.

The evaluations would be done by Calhoun-Burns.

“We need better analysis done on these bridges,” Charles City engineer John Fallis said.

Trucks and Trailers

A new weight limit and guide lines for trucks and trailers were discussed during the meeting.

“Our weight limits are pretty low right now,” said Charles City Assistant City Attorney Brad Sloter.

A possible ordinance was brought up because of complaints filed in the city against trucks and trailers in residential areas.

No ordinance was voted on, but more information was requested by Mayor Erb.

Law Enforcement Committee

The Charles City Law Enforcement Committee visited law enforcement centers in Decorah and Waverly, City Administrator Steve Diers said.

The committee visited those centers because of the joint law enforcement building being proposed to be build around the Floyd County Sheriff’s office and jail.

“Well worth the visits,” Diers said.
