Around 200 families and children took part in the candy cane search at Central Park, hosted for the second time this year by Hy-Vee.

Starting at 6 p.m., scores of kids left no rock unturned as they picked up lighted tubes full of treats laid out across the park.

More than 4,000 candy canes were planted this year, along with Snickers bars and other treats, store director Ryan Parker said.

“We have lots of vendors that help us with this, so we had donations from Coke, Frito-Lay, AE Dairy,” Parker said.

The store had volunteers from the Charles City High School and Big Brothers Big Sisters Charles City assist. After the search’s end, Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus were on-hand at Hy-Vee to greet families and hear holiday wishes.

“It’s a lot of fun. We’re happy about the turnout, there’s a lot of people here,” Parker said.
