Supervisors OK 2018 holiday schedule, add a day off

Most Floyd County employees will get another paid vacation day next year because of the way the calendar falls.

County supervisors at their regular meeting Tuesday morning decided to close the courthouse on Monday, Dec. 24, 2018 — Christmas Eve — in addition to the other holidays scheduled through the year.

County Auditor Gloria Carr, who also serves as clerk to the supervisors and manages the courthouse facilities, said during a planning session Monday that the day will likely be “extremely slow” because the Christmas holiday falls on Tuesday next year.

“I doubt there will be much for traffic coming into the courthouse,” she said.

Carr recommended the courthouse stay open the following Monday, Dec. 31, 2018 — New Year’s Eve — however, because some of the departments are busy that day as people come to the courthouse to make last-minute payments for tax purposes before the year ends.

The holidays the courthouse will be closed in 2018 are New Year’s Day, Jan. 1; Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 15; Memorial Day, May, 28; Independence Day, July 4; Labor Day, Sept. 3; Veterans Day, Nov. 12; Thanksgiving, Nov. 22; Friday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 23; Christmas Eve, Dec. 24; and Christmas, Dec. 25.

Also at the meeting Tuesday, supervisors:

• Made several appointments to boards and commissions of positions that will be expiring at the end of this year. Myrna Jakoubek and Paula Kingery were re-appointed to three-year terms on the Floyd County Memorial Hospital Commission; Rosemary Tobin and Dr. Lisa Kapler were re-appointed to three-year terms on the county Board of Health; and Guy Carpenter was re-appointed to a five-year term on the Zoning Commission.

• Approved use of courthouse grounds and facilities for the Cullen Mob Mile benefit run on Jan. 13, subject to receipt of appropriate insurance form. The event is a fundraiser for the Charles City High School cross country teams.

• Set 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, for a public hearing on a county budget amendment.

• Met with representatives of Cerro Gordo County for a Joint Drainage District No. 6 and No. 56 meeting.
