Recycling totes are out, garbage totes coming

By Thomas Nelson, tnelson@charlescitypress.com

There is still time to specify to the city what size garbage totes residents would like for the new solid waste collection system that will begin this spring.

Jendro Sanitation and the Charles City Street Department started to roll out recycling totes in December and are almost finished.

“Most of those have been delivered,” said Charles City Administrator Steven Diers.

The green garbage totes will soon start to be delivered to households.

“We just want to let people know that those that haven’t contacted City Hall about their size, the plan is to send them a 65-gallon container,” Diers said. “It’s still not too late to let us know what size you’d like.

“Please Call Hity hall at your earliest convenience to let us know,” he said.

The original deadline to choose which size garbage tote a household wanted was Friday, Dec. 1. The city sent out postcards to residents and is still compiling that information.

Residents will be able to change sizes up to two times a year if they find their initial choice is too small or too big, or if the amount of waste they produce changes.

Residents are also reminded to not use the totes before the new system begins April 1. Totes put out on the curb before then will not be emptied.
