Rescheduled jazz competition at North Grand Building

Press Staff Report

The Iowa High School Music Association State Jazz Festival will be open to the public at North Grand Building on Wednesday (today).

The contest was postponed from its earlier date Monday because of the weather.

The Charles City High School Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jake Gassman, is scheduled to perform at 6:30 p.m., but could perform earlier depending on how the day goes.

Jazz ensembles from seven high schools — Turkey Valley, Central Springs, New Hampton, Sumner-Fredericksburg, North Fayette Valley, Decorah and Charles City — will participate in the contest and each will play about three selections each.

One of the festival judges will be Tom Haugen, a former Charles City teacher.

The contest will begin at 2 p.m. at 500 North Grand and could go as late as 7:15 p.m., Gassman said.
