Individual speech contestants perform their way into state competition

Fourteen Charles City High School students received Division I or Division DII ratings at district individual speech contests Saturday, Feb. 24, at Riceville High School in Riceville.

The 14 Comet students participated in 21 individual speech events and received 15 DI ratings.

Emily Woodward, Eliza Wolford, Maria McKenzie and Lily Woodward each received DI ratings in both of their events.

The Iowa High School Speech Association contests were held at 16 sites across the state.

Students from the schools, including Charles City, in the northeast region who received I ratings will participate in state individual speech competition on March 10 at Starmont High School in Arlington.

These students received DI or DII ratings at the district competition:

  • Valerie Allison — Musical Theatre (“Climbing Uphill”) DI.
  • Brian Feres — Acting DI, Prose Interpretation DII.
  • Emily Woodard — Prose DI, Solo Improvisation DI.
  • Ruby Peterson — Acting DI.
  • Eliza Wolford — Radio News Announcing DI, Literary Program DI.
  • Ashlyn Bauer — Musical Theater (“Anything Goes”) DII, Poetry DI.
  • Cameron McKenna — Storytelling DII, Literary Program DII.
  • Ryan Wolfe — Acting DI.
  • Isaak Jensen — Prose DI.
  • Makenna Jensen — Storytelling DII.
  • Mariah McKenzie — Radio News DI, Solo Improvisation DI.
  • Lily Woodard — Solo Improvisation DI, Spontaneous Speaking DI.
  • Rosie Baldus — Literary Program DI.
  • Anastasia Baldus — Public Address DII.
