Charles City Community School District Board of Education didn’t have much public business on its agenda on Monday, but the board members still needed to stick around awhile.

A 90-minute workshop was conducted by Harry Heiligenthal of the Iowa Association of School Boards regarding superintendent evaluation and superintendent board goal setting.

After the workshop, the board went into closed session to review and discuss records which are required or authorized by state or federal law to be kept confidential. The session regarded two items involving students.

Charles City School Board President Jason Walker, Vice President Scott Dight and directors Missy Freund, Josh Mack and Robin Macomber were all present, as well as Superintendent Mike Fisher and business manager and board secretary Terri O’Brien.

In other business Monday, the school board unanimously approved the appointment of Brooke Hamm, ELL instructional assistant, at the wage of $14.66 per hour, effective Aug. 29. The board also approved volunteer cheer coach Heather Reiher and the transfer of Keisha Cunnings from high school study hall instructional aide to high school secretary/study hall instructional aide.

The school year is about to start, with new teacher days taking place Wednesday and Thursday last week and the rest of the staff returning Friday for professional development, which is taking place this week until Thursday, which is the first day of school with students.

The district will kick off the school year with an open house today (Tuesday) at the Charles City Middle School from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Any students or family in the community who would like to visit are welcome. The open house is also an opportunity for fifth-grade to eighth-grade families to meet their teachers and get familiar with the building.

The next school board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at the middle school seventh-grade learning studio.
