Nola Ann (Dawson) Guthart, the daughter of James and Esther (Looff) Dawson, was born October 7, 1929 in Charles City, Iowa.  She received her education in Charles City, graduating from Charles City High School in 1948.  On May 10, 1953, she was united in marriage to Russell Guthart and this union was blessed with four daughters.  Dody worked at Weinberger’s Pharmacy, in the office at Oliver and managed the fabric shop at Ben Franklin.  Even though she enjoyed working at these various places, the most important roles for her were wife and mother.  Dody always felt that family came first and tried to live this throughout her life.  She and her mother sewed a lot of her daughters’ clothing through high school and also sewed prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses, her own dresses and even a wedding gown.

Dody was a Charter Member of Messiah Lutheran Church where she was very active on numerous committees and made 17 large banners for the church.  She volunteered time at the hospital as a Pink Lady, was on the hospital auxiliary board for several years, spent time with patients and delivered Meals on Wheels.  Dody was also a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and the Wildwood Ladies Golf Association.  She also organized a coffee group at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home for the residents and their spouses while Russell was a resident there.

Dody enjoyed cooking, baking, golfing, sewing and playing cards (mostly bridge and 500), but most of all loved spending time with her family.  She and Russell were fortunate to retire early which allowed them time for traveling, extra shopping and visiting the girls.  Dody was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who will be missed dearly by those who loved her.

Living family members include four daughters and their husbands:  Deb (Don) McInroy of Floyd, Becky (Mike) Thome of Charles City, Patty Hamrick (Rick Uglum) of Chanhassen, Minnesota and Tammy (Brad) VanHorn of Eagan, Minnesota; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Richard Dawson and sister, Cheryl Sullivan both of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Russell on November 7, 2013; and brother, James Dawson.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Messiah Lutheran Church or the Charles City YMCA.
