LaVerne M. Gibbs

LaVerne M. Gibbs age 87 of Nashua, IA died Sunday, August 12, 2018, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, IA.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, 2018, at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua with Rev. Kim Smith officiating.

Interment will be held in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua with Beau Biekert, Clint Biekert, Beryl Biekert, Nate Gibbs, Ryan Gibbs and Tony Gibbs serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Eric Shepard, Brittany Henn, Amanda Ramoz and Michael Green. Military honors will be conducted by the Nashua V.F.W. Ralph W. Nicholson. Post 6792.

LaVerne Malcomb Gibbs was born Dec. 18, 1930, in Dundee, IA, the son of Henry and Ida (Lewis) Gibbs. He attended Dundee High School until the 10th grade when he joined the United States Navy. He was stationed in San Diego, CA, for two years. LaVerne transferred into the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict.

On a blind date, he met the love of his life, Joan Hawker. The two were set up on the date by his cousin. The couple were married June 11, 1953, in Las Vegas, NV.

After getting married, the couple moved around Northeast Iowa, living in Alpha, Waucoma, and Lawler. They had many adventures together and made countless memories in the process. In 1969 the couple settled down in Nashua. LaVerne began working for Oliver in Charles City in 1962 and retired from then named White Farm in 1993.

One of LaVerne and Joan’s favorite things to do was travel to Texas for the winter together. They spent 18 winters in Texas together making lifelong friendships and memories during these times.

LaVerne is survived by two sons, Terry (Connie) Gibbs of Tyler, TX, Doug (Terri) Gibbs of Nashua, IA; one daughter, Lori (Dave) Green of Shell Rock, IA; nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joan in 2016; two daughters, Cathy Shepard and Jan Biekert; one brother, Burl Gibbs.
