Martin Berding

Martin Berding, 70 of 1310 D. ST., Charles City, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City.

Graveside Inurnment services will be held at noon, Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2018 at Riverside Cemetery, Charles City, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. at the VFW in Charles City. Pot luck will follow the service. Officiating will be Rev. Deb Lincoln. Memorials may be made to the family or Disabled American Veterans.

Martin was born on Feb. 18, 1948 in Charles City the son of Lee Anda Dietrich and Cecelia Ann “Jenson” Berding. He graduated from Colwell High School and then earned his degree in small engine repair. He honorably served his country in the Army during the Vietnam conflict from 1969 to 1971. He served as a Specialist 4, with the Signal Corps. After returning he worked on the track crew for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. Marty was a voracious reader and enjoyed science fiction books the most. He would read a crate of books every week. He was one of the best customers of the library. He enjoyed fishing when he could and was a very proud “Grumpy” grandpa that truly loved the grandkids. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and the Disabled American Veterans. He was united in marriage to Jean Sheffner on Sept. 6, 1996 in Charles City.

Surviving Martin is his wife Jean, three children Misty (Matt) Johnson, Amber Berding, Brian (Kim) Sheffner all of Charles City, 10 grandchildren Justine and Jacklyn Tarrants, Maxwell, Colbie, and Trevor Johnson, McKayla Heczko, Toni, Ashley and Morgan Koenigs, Jacob Sheffner-Heczko and one great-granddaughter Raelyn. Also his siblings Jule Berding, Floyd; Helene (Julio) Benetiz, Woodbury, MN; Sue Berding-Bemis, Elgin, S. Carolina; Aletha Berding-Powell, Floyd, IA; John Berding, Fertile; Lynn Berding, Charles City; and Tony Berding, Wood Lake, Minnesota and many many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Marty in death is his previous wife Julie (Cagley) Berding, his parents Lee in 1990 and Cecelia in 2013 and one nephew Eric Berding.
