Tracy Anne Schmidt

Screen Shot 2019-02-13 at 4.14.27 PMTracy Anne Schmidt, 53, of Mankato and formerly from Iowa, died Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at her home after a courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer.

Tracy was born July 1, 1965 in Mason City, IA to Carrol Dean and Wanda Marie (Reynolds) Schmidt. While a student at North Central High School in Manly, IA, Tracy excelled in all four sports and was awarded Athlete of the Year as a senior. She earned a bachelor degree from Upper Iowa University. Tracy taught and coached at a number of places including Ottawa University; and Ventura, Garner and Lake Crystal Middle Schools. Coaching, teaching, and math were Tracy’s passions. One of her superpowers was to see the potential in individual students, especially those whose potential might not have readily apparent to themselves or others.

On May 24, 2014, Tracy married Joan Nikolay in Mankato. Together, Tracy and Joan enjoyed family and friends, traveling, and high school athletics.

Tracy is survived by her wife, Joan Nikolay of Mankato; sisters Theresa (Ron) Corell of Manly, IA, Carrie (Jenny) Schmidt of Charles City, IA, and Cristy Schmidt Cooper of Manly, IA; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as Joan’s family who enthusiastically welcomed Tracy into their own family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, David and Dean Schmidt, and infant Donny Schmidt.

Visitation will be held from 4-7pm Friday, February 15, 2019 at Northview ~ North Mankato Mortuary (2060 Commerce Drive, North Mankato, MN 56003). Memorial service will be 11am, Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Northview with visitation two hours prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to be directed to Forward4Tobi in memory of Tracy or toward a school memorial to be designated later.
