Art-a-Fest another blessing for Charles City

By Tia McInroy |  Art a Fest Committee Member

While walking along the Cedar River or strolling through Central Park, I feel fortunate to be able to view and enjoy the various sculptures in our town.

I feel lucky to live in a community that is home to the Mooney Gallery, with original prints from Rembrandt to Dali, and an active Arts Center, which provides ever-changing exhibits and classes for all ages.

Although at times I take this for granted, I know that such public artwork is rare for a town our size, and a great resource for an Art educator such as myself. I am certain most members of our community enjoy artwork on a daily basis. Whether it is listening to music or enjoying the paintings displayed in our homes, artwork is an important part of our lives.  It helps enrich and connect us.

Charles City also has a yearly art fair where attendees can purchase original artwork directly from artists, and enjoy the sounds of talented musicians. Currently in its 43rd year, Art-a-Fest will be held at Central Park (rain location is Trinity United Methodist Church) on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thirty-six regional artists and six high school artists will exhibit, and six musicians will perform throughout the day. Artist and antique dealer Laura Holt Blanchet will judge the fair, delicious food will be available for sale, and children of all ages will have opportunities to experience interactive arts.

We are fortunate to have such wonderful exhibits of talent in Charles City.  I encourage you to stop by Central Park on Saturday to support the local and regional artists that help enrich our lives and the life of our community.  You are sure to find original artwork to adorn your home or office, experience new musical sounds, and have plenty of fun.  Visit artafestcharlescity.weebly.com for artist statements and photos, a list of performers and vendors, Art a Fest sponsors, children’s activities, and more.  Hope to see you there!
