Retired Charles City veterinarian, Dr. Merle Lockwood, was an avid tree planter. After his passing, his family gave a memorial to the Floyd County Izaak Walton League, Ike’s Vice President Jon Schneckcloth said. Knowing Lockwood’s passion for planting trees, the Ike’s purchased 20 saplings and donated them, along with their time, to be planted at Ackley Creek, a Floyd County park.

“There are six red oaks, six bur oaks, three serviceberries and five maples,” Floyd County Conservation Resident Ranger Tyler Walters said.

According to Schneckloth, Lockwood’s surviving family instructed the Ike’s not to include a commemorative plaque.

In roughly an hour, nine Ike’s members and two county conservation employees were able to plant, mulch, water and fence off the young trees.
