Nub: that sucker had a mouth on him like you wouldn’t believe

Recently Nub Ronnei, owner of Nub’s Bait, Tackle & More, heard a successful fishing story for the record books. A father and hid sons came into the bait shop to show off their photos.

“(They) had a really nice bass…had a yard stick and it was 19 inches long,” Nub said. “That sucker had a mouth on him like you wouldn’t believe.”

According to Nub, the largemouth bass was picture perfect.

“He didn’t have much for battle wounds on him,” Nub said. “He looked just as pretty as heck.”

Wanting to teach his kids good outdoorsmen practices, they only kept photos of the fish.

“They turned him loose,” Nub said. “This dad is teaching his boys the nice way to go about it — keep what you’re going to eat and turn the rest of them loose.”

Another pair practicing catch-and-release found success near Howard’s Woods reeling in walleyes.

“They had four of them up above 19 inches, nice pretty looking ones,” Nub said of the photos.

According to Nub, the two anglers reported the walleye had easy to please appetites.

“There were two guys in the boat, one was using plastics, twister tails and the other used a jig head and a minnow and they each caught two,” he said.

While “flavor” didn’t matter to the walleyes, presentation did.

“They did say it was the lighter colors,” Nub said.

In spite of a summer of fluctuating river levels, the catfish are still putting up a fight. Wednesday morning Nub sold chicken liver and chubs to some eager kids who were able to get into the catfish earlier that morning. Nub also had luck bringing in catfish.

“I must a caught about 7 hour catfish, I was fishing for maybe two hours,” he said.

Nub went after closing up shop, roughly 8 p.m. and relaxed as brought in the catfish and let them go again.

“I turned them all loose,” he said. “I like to catch them about as many as I need to run me through winter.” Before catching and freezing any more, Nub first likes to eat up what he has stored.
