CHARLES CITY — If your team has the nerve to don neon green shirts, you’d better be good.

If not, everyone in the house is going to know it by the attention you attract.

There was no hiding last year at the City Bowling Tournament for team Unggoy Broadband.

“We came in last place,” said Unggoy leadoff man Mike Garden.

What a difference a year makes.

After the final scores of the tournament’s Team event were tabulated Thursday at Comet Bowl, Unggoy — with combined score of 3,578 (3,191 scratch, 387 added handicap) — emerged as city champs.

“It usually comes down to when one guy has a bad frame, another guy picks him up,” said Dave Diercks, who incidentally was the only one not wearing neon green — at least not during the post-tourney photo shoot.

The “Green Team” was led by anchorman Aaron Garden, who shot a 740 series (224-258-258). Mike Garden had a 651 (234-192-225), followed by Diercks (607), Matt Wier (637) and Brad Cline (556).

The following Sunday, Wier and Aaron Garden shed their green shirts but made sure they packed their game as they won the “A” division Doubles event with a combined score of 1,382.

“We actually bowled better on Thursday,” Aaron Garden said.

“But again, it was a matter of picking each other up whenever needed,” said Wier, who credited Comet Bowl owner Mark Barry in making sure the lanes in were in good scoring condition.

“Anything bad was all on us,” Wier said.

Winning the “B” division Doubles were Jon Fuente and Mark Kabele.
