MANLY — Pioneer Town and Country Club can inflict you with a type of short game that tends to lead to a very long day.

The North Butler Bearcat boys and girls golf teams found that out the hard way in separate meets against Central Springs and St. Ansgar on Monday.

“We scored much higher today than what we normally score,” North Butler golf coach Todd Thompson said. “This course provides a lot of challenges. There’s a lot of water to contend with, and the greens are fast and hard.”

One particular green that played fast and hard, and helped spoil several would-be decent to good scores was Pioneer’s hole No. 9. A par 4 than caps the par 35 nine-hole course, it provided several golfers an idea of what Ernie Els went through while 6-putting to start The Masters.

More than several otherwise on-target putts cleared over the hole’s top and lipped out because they had too much speed to fall in.

“Not only are the greens hard, they have a lot of slope to them,” said North Butler senior Michael DeBerg.

DeBerg and his threesome finished their round on hole No. 4. After deftly chipping onto the green, DeBerg coolly sunk a 15-foot putt to save par.

He finished with a 43, which led the Bearcats.

“I’ve shot much better, but I guess I’ll take that here,” DeBerg said.

“We’ve had several different guys lead the team in scoring and earn medalist honors his year,” Thompson said.

Colin Salz of St. Ansgar shot a medalist score of 40 as the Saints paced the boys meet with a team score of 179.

North Butler shot 188 as a team as Jaret Wunsch was the next-best Bearcat at 47.

Central Springs, whose home course is Pioneer, was led by Austin Dillavou (45) and finished with a 195 team score.

On Friday, North Butler’s boys team shot their best round of the year (168) as freshman Beau Thompson and senior Wunsch recorded respective scores of 38 and 39, their personal bests of the year as the Bearcats defeated both West Fork and Rockford.

“We’ll be back home Thursday,” Thompson said of hosting Osage and Northwood-Kensett at Round Grove Country Club, “so we should shoot a little better.”

Central Springs, behind Kelli Wilson’s medalist round of 51, won the girls meet with a team score of 233.

North Butler edged St. Ansgar by one stroke — 276-277 — for second-best honors.

Laura Kreimeyer led North Butler with a 67.
