CHARLES CITY — Aggressive offense comes in various forms.

The type that swings at 3-0 pitches.

The type that intentionally gets into rundowns to score teammates from third.

The type that lays down suicide-squeeze bunts with the bases load.

The BCLUW Comets sampled all those varieties and some in between while winning big over the Charles City Comets, 15-3, in non-conference softball action Wednesday at Sportsmen’s Park.

BCLUW not only managed to get the first batter on in each of the first three innings, but managed at one point to load the bases in all those frames. And the Comets (the BCLUW ones, mind you) didn’t leave too many of them stranded.

Before you knew it, BCLUW had an 10-1 lead through three innings.

That obviously wasn’t good news for Charles City, which were up against BCLUW ace Olivia Callaway, who came into the game with a 13-1 record and an earned run average of 0.48.

Aside from an unearned run in the first inning, Charles City finally managed to get to Callaway in the fourth inning to delay the slaughter run from taking effect.

With one out, Sara Martin walked ahead of Bailey Mitchell’s singled up the middle — the first hit off Callaway at that point. Tayler Schmidt followed with a single to left field that got past the resident outfielder allowing Martin and Mitchell to score.

That made the score 11-3.

Samantha Ubben came into relieve Callaway in the fifth and went on to pitch two perfect innings before the game was stopped after six innings.

Calloway was 3-for-4 including an RBI double in the fourth inning that just missed clearing the fence in left-center. Olivia Hughes was 3-for-3 with four runs scored for BCLUW, which improve to 19-7 for the season.

Charles City did get an able performance from eighth-grader Alex Litterer, who relieved CC starter Schmidt in the fourth inning. In three innings, Litterer stuck out three — including BCLUW home run leader Callaway — walked three and yielded five hits while only two of the five runs scored off her were earned.

For the Charles City Comets, it was their worse loss of the season in terms of margin of defeat as it dropped their record to 14-7.

They will try to rebound tonight with a doubleheader against Northeast Iowa Conference rival New Hampton at Mikkelson Park.
