Foster sets school record in 200 as Comets shine at two meets simultaneously

CHARLES CITY — When Osage’s Monday girls track meet was postponed to Tuesday, it didn’t really throw Charles City off schedule.

Yeah, the Comets’ home opener of the outdoor season was also on Tuesday. And, thus, to be participants in both forced them to split squads like major league baseball teams do in the preseason.

“But we were planning to do that, anyway,” Charles City assistant coach Amanda Rahmiller said. “It’s hard to compete in meets on consecutive days. And when you have more than 70 girls on your team, you want to give the opportunity to the kids who put in the work.”

Much of Charles City’s underclass athletes stayed at home, while the veteran seniors competed at Osage. Rahmiller was present for the home meet; head coach Darren Bohlen was in Osage.

Both liked what they saw.

“We only brought 15 down with us,” Bohlen said of the away meet, “and we placed pretty well.”

With the hosting Green Devils placing first with 158 points, the Comets were second with 115 points.

A good portion of that output came from senior Katie Foster, who set a school record in the 200 with a time of 25.80 seconds.

Foster, who placed second at state as a sophomore in the 200, also won the 100 with a time of 12.62.

“That’s also pretty close to a school record,” Bohlen said.

Senior Brianna Carey, who’s already in the Charles City record books as a member of the Comets’ standard-setting 4-by-100 shuttle hurdle relay, won the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.73 seconds.

Bailey Mitchell won the 800 for Charles City with a personal-best time of 2:34.76.

Foster, Carey, Alex Litterer and Sami Heyer won the 4-by-100 with a time of 53.53 seconds and the 800 sprint medley relay with a time of 1:56.62.

Meanwhile, back in Charles City.

“Several of our freshmen had great meets,” Rahmiller said. “Especially Olyvia Zuspan in the high jump.”

New to the event, Zuspan cleared a height of 4 feet, 10 inches … a 4-inch improvement from her last meet, while finishing third behind champion Piper Watson of Mason City (5 feet), and runner-up Ellec Armstead of Waukon, who matched Zuspan’s clear but achieved it in fewer attempts.

Rahmiller said they also got a surprising performance from freshman Ingrid Hernandez in the 800.

“Her goal was to get down to 2:45 and she did it in the first outdoor meet of the season,” Rahmiller said of Hernandez, who was nipped by New Hampton’s Kallie Olson at the finish by less than a 10th of a second to win the race.

Lynn Hoeft, another Comet freshmen, had a strong meet running the hurdles for Charles City. She teamed up with Zuspan and returning state qualifiers Sadie Ruzicka and Tayler Schmidt to win their heat and eventually place fourth in the 4-by-100 shuttle hurdle relay.

“Our two veterans (Ruzicka and Schmidt) have said they like running the event with her, so that says a lot,” Rahmiller said.

In the discus, junior Sydney Lockle recorded a second-place throw of 102 feet, 3 ½ inches behind champion Megan Niewoehner (103-11) of North Fayette Valley.
