DECORAH — Not to start an argument, but for some reason boys run 1,600-meter races while the girls run only 1,500.

Regardless of the reason, Charles City junior Gavin Connell sprinted that extra 100 meters while holding off New Hampton’s Keagan John to win the race by a little more than a second (4:54.53 to 4:55.60) for one of the Comet victories Tuesday at the Decorah Early Bird Meet.

Comet senior Brandon Bluhm won the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 5 inches to continue his string of attaining flights of 20 feet or more this season while including the three indoor meets.

The Early Bird Meet, which was originally scheduled for Monday, was the first outdoor meet of the season for the Comets.

Connell and Bluhm were also part of the Comets’ winning 1600-meter distance medley relay team. Including Dylan Koresh and Maxwell Deeter, Charles City placed first with a time of 3:51.26.

The hosting Vikings won the meet with 95 team points, followed by New Hampton (59), Waukon (41), South Winneshiek (41) and Charles City (40).
