Weather finally breaks allowing Comet girls golf team to start season against New Hampton at home

CHARLES CITY — As season progresses, the days will get longer and the games will get shorter.

So finishing a 9-hole round as dusk looms may become a rarer occurrence for the Charles City girls golf team.

In a belated home opener against New Hampton on Friday at Cedar Ridge Golf Course, the final foursome made it back to the clubhouse just as the sun dipped below the treeline.

“I don’t think there was any problem with the pace of play,” Charles City girls golf coach Eric Johanningmeier said.

The groups were sent out in order. Though the pace of play may not have slowed things down, the number of shots to get the ball in the cup added to the minutes.

With the Chickasaws recording a team score of 190, the Comets finished well behind with a 254.

“We saw some good things, and we saw some things we need to work on,” Johanningmeier said. “One thing I do like is that I know they’re mad at their scores and they’re determined to get better.”

Charles City senior and returning all-conference player Gen Wandro led the Comets with a 58.

The Chickasaws got a trio of 47s from Mya Anderson and freshmen Allison and Morgan Nuss 47.

“It’s early in the season and we know our scores are going to get better,” Johanningmeier said. “They just can’t get discouraged.”

NEW HAMPTON (190)

Mya Anderson 47, Allison Nuss 47, Morgan Nuss 47, Ellie Ewert 49.

CHARLES CITY (254)

Gen Wandro 58, Mija Cotton 62, Kara Hoffman 66, Emma Williams 68
