NEW HAMPTON — After spotting the New Hampton Chickasaws the first 7 points of the game, the Charles City Comets managed to respond and stay within striking distance while scoring 18 points in the second quarter — the best stanza output of the season for them— before going into halftime trailing 35-28.

It appeared to still be anyone’s game at the halfway point with both teams engaging in their first Northeast Iowa Conference contest of the season.

But when the Chickasaws returned from the locker room, they rolled out a more tenacious full-court press and scored the first 13 points of the second half in rapid succession.

They didn’t let up much from there as they outscored the Comets 31-6 in the third quarter to eventually win going away in a 79-39 final.

New Hampton placed 10 of its players in the scoring column with three of them attaining double-figures. Senior Isabel Leichman led the charge with a game-high 20 points. Marcy Uglum and Lauren Frerichs scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Chickasaws who improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the NEIC.

Charles City junior Jodie Sindlinger achieved double-figure scoring for the second time this season while leading the Comets with 10 points.

Comet sophomore Olivia Zuspan scored 9, including a pair NBA-range 3-pointers that helped get Charles City’s offense going in the second quarter.

Junior Kara Hoffman, who has emerged as Charles City’s other long-range threat, also connected on a pair of 3-pointers for 6 points.

Senior Payton Reams and sophomore Lynn Hoeft scored 6 points apiece for the Comets (0-4, 0-1), who will not find playing on the road any easier come Friday when they travel to take on the Class 3A No. 2-ranked Crestwood Cadets in the first game of a varsity girls-boys basketball doubleheader.
