GREENE — Osage senior Nathan Bushbaum was easily the smallest player on the court when his Green Devils took on North Butler in Top of Iowa-East boys basketball action Tuesday night on the Bearcats’ court.

Maybe that’s why to him the goal must have looked like the size of a hula-hoop.

Bushbaum drained seven 3-pointers while leading all scorers with 23 points as the Green Devils defeated the Bearcats, 66-40, to improved their overall record to 4-1 while remaining perfect (4-0) in conference play.

Osage also got 18 points from Lucas Schwamman, who compiled his output the old fashioned way with 2’s from the field and 1’s from free-throw line.

Schwamman also had four steals and four blocks, and helped keep numerous Green Devils possessions alive by crashing the offensive glass. His putback that drew a foul and resulted in a 3-point play gave Osage a 43-27 lead midway through the third quarter after North Butler made a brief run to make a dent in a 12-point halftime deficit.

North Butler was coming off a double-overtime loss to Saint Ansgar on Saturday for its first setback of the season.

Senior Dylan Clipperton, who is nearing several Bearcat basketball career records, scored 14 points to lead North Butler, which fell to 4-2 in both overall and conference play.

* In the previous girls varsity game, the Green Devils improved their undefeated overall (5-0) and conference (4-0) records with a 61-25 win over North Butler.

In a rare occasion, Osage managed to score more than 60 but posted no double-figure scorers as Mia Knudsen, Rylie Olson and Sydney Midlang all scored 9 points.

In another rare occasion, every Green Devil — 12 in all — contributed to the scoring column.

Osage also played some defense as they limited the Bearcats to 1 point the entire third quarter to put the game away.

Madison Pleas had 6 points to North Butler, which fell to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in conference.

Both Bearcat teams won’t be back in action until Dec. 19 when they host Nashua-Plainfield in a TOIE varsity doubleheader.
