OELWEIN — It’s safe to say that more than a handful of people have tabbed “losing weight” as one of their New Year’s resolutions.

Yet the Charles City Comets wrestling team is primed to gain some weight in 2018, as in gaining weight classes.

With several Comet wrestlers active again and others due to return in the near future, Charles City managed to fill 12 weight classes for its Northeast Iowa Conference dual meet against the hosting Oelwein Huskies on Thursday. Not only did Charles City manage to fill the most weight classes thus far this season, it also for the most part held its weight in the matches wrestled, winning 6 out of 10 while recording three falls and two technical falls while winning the dual, 43-27.

For the Comets, it was their first NEIC dual meet victory of the year let alone season.

Charles City went up 10-0 with 145-pounder Cole Reams and 152-pounder Dylan Koresh earning the aforementioned technical falls.

Reams provoked a 19-2 stoppage 5:24 into his bout against Drake Logan, and returning state-qualifier Koresh — with the visiting crowd and his teammates cheering him on — managed to record the takedown needed with 4 seconds remaining in regulation for his 18-3 TF.

The Huskies responded with three straight fall victories before senior 195-pounder Sam Niichel got the Comets back on track by promptly pinning Austin Dison in 22 seconds.

Later when Comet 126-pounder Alec Staudt stuck Blake Smith 4:42 into their bout, it sealed the meet victory for Charles City.

Earlier, Charles City’s Tylor Zuspan pinned Cooper Smock midway through the second period of their heavyweight bout.

Comet freshman Roush Jaeger closed the meet by earning a 6-3 decision over Andrew Roete in their 138-pound match.

The Comets had one match slip away from them when Carson Jaenes recorded a reversal in the final 15 seconds of his 113-pound match against Charles City sophomore Bronson Forsyth, which resulted in a 5-4 decision win.

Charles City will be back in action this Saturday at a tournament hosted by Clear Lake.
