Bearcats finish 4th, Comets take 5th at Clear Lake Invite

CLEAR LAKE — It’s good to be king.

For a six-year stretch from from 2010 to 2015, the Charles City Comets ruled the Clear Lake Wrestling Invitational thanks in part to four-time invite champion Jesse Etherington.

But now for past two years, the tourney has been ruled by the hosting Lions as their 210.5 team points placed them ahead of runner-up Emmetsburg by 190 points.

As for the Comets, they placed fifth with 113 points amid the eight-team field.

In the 152-pound bracket, Charles City junior Dylan Koresh emerged as the Comets’ lone individual champion after defeating Mason Griffin of Emmetsburg with a 7-2 decision in the final match.

Though a returning state qualifier and a Class 1A Top-10 ranked Iowa wrestler, Koresh was seeded No. 3 in the bracket before defeating Griffin, who’s ranked in Class 1A, and improving his record to 17-3.

Charles City sophomore Bronson Forsyth advanced to the 113-pound championship bout where he faced undefeated North Butler junior Bryce Trees, who is ranked No. 5 in Class 1A.

Trees recorded a fall in 1:23 to earn his 22nd victory of the season as well as his second straight Clear Lake Invite title.

North Butler senior Brandon Trees — ranked No. 6 as a Class 1A 170-pounder — also won his second straight invite title with a 1:35 fall victory over Jon Lace of Emmetsburg in the championship match while improving to 23-0 for the season.

Also fielding a runner-up in the 132-pound bracket —sophomore Teryn Joebgen, who lost a major decision to Emmetsburg’s Ethan Bervan — the Bearcats placed fourth with 132 points.

In the consolation bracket, Charles City managed to salvage four third-place showings with Elliott Sinnwell (160), Sam Niichel (182), Josh Halligan (220) and Tylor Zuspan (285) all winning their final bouts of the day.

The champion Lions boasted five champions in Sam Nelson (106), Eric Faught (126), Braxton Doebel (145), Ben Finn (160) and Kade Hambly (195).

Other champions included Christian Nichols (120), Spencer Griffin (138) and Jimmie Steffens of Emmetsburg; Dayton Smith (182) of Saint Ansgar; and Dominick Etherington (285) of Algona.
